San Franciscans know that rooftop dining isn’t particularly common around these parts, so we’re fascinated to see the new rooftop restaurant coming to Union Square. Nikkei restaurant Chotto Matte has finally revealed its new opening date — Saturday, October 21, 2023 — a month after it was originally scheduled to open.
The wraparound rooftop restaurant will grace the top of the Union Square’s newly-renovated 8-level department store which was formerly Macy’s Men’s. Award-winning designer Andy Martin SUPERFUTURES has created a sleek and welcoming ambience with Japanese lavastone, shou sugi ban wood, and a merged patio design for guests to enjoy the views even when it’s chilly out.
Chotto Matte serves innovative Nikkei cuisine, which is a mix of Japanese and Peruvian food resulting from the influence of Japanese culture in Peru. Some menu items to look out for are Chotto Branzino Ceviche, Tentáculos de Pulpo, Sato Maki sushi and Pollo den Miso.
Guests can watch their meal be prepared in Chotto Matte’s open-kitchen format with a robata grill and open sushi counter. This San Francisco location will also serve its own capsule cocktail menu showcasing the restaurant’s Tokyo to Lima beverage collection.
“I am thrilled to bring Chotto Matte, our unique dining haven nestled atop San Francisco’s vibrant cityscape on Union Square,” said Kurt Zdesar, Founding Director at Chotto Matte, “Overlooking the city, our rooftop restaurant and lounge provide a captivating backdrop for a dining experience that’s truly one-of-a-kind.”
The restaurant has thriving locations in London, Toronto, Miami, and Doha. In addition to San Francisco, they plan to open more locations in LA, Nashville, Philadelphia, Riyadh, and Manchester.
The rest of the 250,000-square-foot building has also seen improvements such as a new, modern façade and eight levels of mixed-used space. It’s designed with the future in mind, to create “new experiences that engage, educate, and facilitate community,” according to real estate firm Blatteis & Schnur.
Chotto Matte will open at 50 O’Farrell St in San Francisco on Oct. 21, 2023. Keep an eye on this exciting opening – we’ll have a new rooftop destination in our midst soon enough!
