The highly-anticipated Nikkei restaurant Chotto Matte was finally unveiled atop the former Macy’s Men’s department store in the fall of 2023. The stylish new wraparound rooftop restaurant towers over San Francisco’s Union Square, offering sweeping views of the city in a welcoming ambience with Japanese lavastone, shou sugi ban wood, and a merged patio design. Some menu items to look out for are Chotto Branzino Ceviche, Tentáculos de Pulpo, Sato Maki sushi and Pollo den Miso.

8. Fiorella Sunset
Beloved Italian restaurant Fiorella opened a new location in the Inner Sunset several years ago, this time with a heated rooftop deck. The bi-level space has a sleek street level dining room, complete with a bar and a working fireplace. The roof deck is a private outdoor space on the second level with string lights, lush greenery, heaters, and a retractable awning for foggy days.

9. KAIYĹŚ Rooftop
This stylish Peruvian-Japanese Nikkei rooftop restaurant opened recently in San Francisco to great excitement. It’s an upscale tropical oasis with stunning views from the 12th floor of the Hyatt Place Hotel, perfect for catching a sunset over the Bay. At the moment it’s just serving cocktails with a small menu of Nikkei small eats, with a full dinner spread coming soon.

This elegant Italian restaurant has an exclusive rooftop available just for groups or private dining. It can accommodate meal service for up to 20 guests and cocktail service for up to 120 guests, with amazing skyline views all around. Rooftop at VIA is situated on top of the VIA Hotel. This 12th-floor rooftop, bar, and lounge area is very exclusive, so you generally can’t get up there unless you’re a hotel guest or part of a private event. Try calling ahead to see if you can go on a slow weekday, or keep an eye on their calendar and social media for upcoming events, because they’ve been known to host rooftop yoga classes and more. There is also a bar open to the public on the ground floor.

Pier 70 has finally opened its massive 5-story RH gallery in the Dogpatch. It includes a beautiful atrium restaurant, a garden rooftop with firepits, and countless showrooms displaying the industry’s most luxurious and upscale home furnishings. Although the restaurant doesn’t serve tables on the rooftop directly, you can get a drink at the Palm Court restaurant and find a seat up there yourself.

Bonus: Salesforce Park
If you’re looking for a rooftop experience without having to pull out your wallet, consider bringing a picnic to enjoy at Salesforce Park. This free, floating park exists 70 feet above the ground, and is teeming with incredible gardens and interesting plants. You can bring your own food and sprawl out on the grass, or grab one of the tables in the large patio area.
