This weekend, a portion of Eastbound Interstate 80 that goes through San Francisco will be closed for several days. Caltrans announced the road closure this week, urging people to use public transit instead.
EB I-80 will be closed between 17th & 4th streets in San Francisco, starting on Friday, April 17th, from 11 pm. The road will remain closed until 6 am on Monday, April 20. Approximately 1.6 miles of the road will be closed, and both the South Bound and North Bound 101 Bayshore Freeway to EB I-80 connector ramps will be closed. The last freeway exit will be Vermont Street, and if you happen to miss the exit, you will be directed to 9th Street and through Bryant St.
As a result, Caltrans expects more traffic than usual in the area, particularly affecting SoMa and Mission Bay. Motorists will be redirected via detailed signs in the area, but Caltrains recommends taking public transit when available to ease traffic in the area.
Why will part of EB I-80 be closed?
The weekend-long road closure is part of a two-year rehabilitation project aimed at improving safety and longevity. Crews will be working on essential rehabilitation to the structure and bridge deck during the weekend. The repairs will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists traveling near the viaducts. Additionally, the repairs will improve road conditions, making them smoother and more comfortable for motorists.
The highway rehabilitation project will continue throughout 2026, and you can find updates to current road closures and upcoming projects on the Caltrans website. Plus, this Caltrans map shows current projects and traffic in the Bay Area.
For this weekend, expect traffic and delays in SoMa and Mission Bay due to the road closure. You can learn more about the upcoming closure here.
