The GLIDE Foundation is a San Francisco-based social justice organization dedicated to fighting poverty and homelessness. This year, they have several holiday initiatives meant to bring essential services and holiday joy to local impoverished communities, many of whom have been severely impacted by Covid-19.
Here are a few of the holiday events currently taking place:
Grocery Bag Giveaway
December 6-8
GLIDE will distribute 5,500 bags of groceries, each of which contains the essential ingredients for a holiday meal. Bags will include a whole free-range chicken or turkey, potatoes or rice, mac & cheese, vegetables, and dinner rolls. Staff and volunteers will package bags on December 6-7, to be distributed to thousands of families on December 8.
Toy Wonderland
December 13-16
GLIDE is collecting new toys for local children under 12. The toy packing event (Dec 13-15) will sort donations into over 700 toy bags, to be delivered for distribution on December 16. Consider donating items from GLIDE’s Amazon Wishlist, which closes December 15.
Christmas celebrations and meals
December 24, 11am-1pm
Joe Betz and the SF House of Prime Rib will serve a free Christmas Eve brunch for up to 2,000 guests in an outdoor tented space. 200 additional meals will be distributed among city encampments.
December 25, 11am-1pm
A free holiday feast with 2,500 meals of ham, turkey, and holiday fixings. To be distributed both onsite and around the city. There will also be a GLIDE Christmas Celebration livestreaming on YouTube and Facebook Live at 10am.
