One of Golden Gate Park’s more recent summer traditions is a pop-up bar, located in a meadow just off JFK Promenade. Named the Whale’s Tail, after the sculpture’s tail that sits on JFK Promenade, the seasonal bar typically opens on Memorial Day and stays open until October.
The bar is open on weekends and features Adirondack chairs, a selection of beer, wine, and even cocktails such as margaritas, palomas, and mimosas. You can also expect plenty of non-alcoholic drink options, including soda, juice, and lemonade. The garden bar also features a rotating lineup of local food trucks and live music.
This Saturday, August 15, The Whale’s Tail is adding some new, exciting programming. A series of lawn games and tabletop games will be available for free, accompanied by live music. As usual, Whale’s Tail is family-friendly and welcomes dogs (a key advantage of an outdoor bar).

You can also grab a bite to eat at El Alambre, the food truck of the week, which serves a variety of Mexican dishes, including tacos, Mulita, and Birria Burrito. The Whale’s Tail is open on Saturday and Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm in Golden Gate Park. While you’re in the area, we recommend heading over to the Dahlia Dell outside the Conservatory of Flowers, which is bursting with colorful flowers.
