Attention, thrifters: Goodwill of the San Francisco Bay (Goodwill SF Bay) just launched its most ambitious expansion in years.
The nonprofit plans to open 80 to 100 large-format retail stores and donation centers across six Bay Area counties over the next decade.
Two new 25,000+ square foot locations have opened in the last 3 months, including a giant new store in Pittsburg that just opened last week. At least five more are expected before the end of the year, according to a comment by CEO Tim O’Neal to SFGATE.
The push follows a long-term strategy that began in 2024, focused on replacing smaller stores with upgraded, high-capacity sites across Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Solano counties.
Two large-format stores in Fairfield and Pittsburg
The first of the new-generation locations opened on April 16, 2026, at 1500 Oliver Road, Fairfield, CA 94534. It spans over 27,000 square feet, which is nearly four times the sales floor space of a typical existing Goodwill store in the area. The location features a drive-up donation drop-off lane and a layout designed for faster processing of donated goods.
The second large-format opening was just last week on July 2, at 230 Atlantic Ave, Pittsburg, CA 94565. At over 25,000 square feet, the Pittsburg store replaces the existing, smaller Goodwill location a few doors down on the same street, with the current team relocating to the upgraded space.
What’s next for the Goodwill expansion
Over the next eight to ten years, Goodwill SF Bay expects to open 80 to 100 new locations across its six-county service area, according to the organization’s recent blog post. As that happens, most of the Bay’s older, smaller Goodwill stores are expected to close — though the nonprofit asserts that closures will not happen all at once, and that each closure is linked to a corresponding large-format upgrade.
The larger stores are designed to generate more revenue through greater operational efficiency, which in turn funds Goodwill SF Bay’s no-cost community programs. The organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has operated in the Bay Area for more than a century.
