Tucked away in the redwoods outside San Francisco, sits the “world’s largest living Christmas tree,” a massive redwood festively decorated with colorful lights for the holidays. The tree is part of the historic Skunk Train’s holiday route, taking visitors through the scenic forest before passing by the massive Christmas Tree.
Located a few hours north of San Francisco, a historic railroad in Mendocino still operates, although only to give scenic rides to visitors. The railroad began in the 1880s to expand lumber operations in the area, called the Fort Bragg Railroad, which would eventually expand into the California Western Railroad. The Skunk Train, which originated in 1925, became known for its strong odor, attributed to the gasoline-powered engine that gave it the name.

Today, the railroad gives scenic rides through the redwoods and allows people to experience the historic trains. The holiday journey includes hot chocolate, treats, and festive music, all while taking riders through the woods to see the massive Christmas tree.
The special holiday train journeys depart from Willits on most days throughout December. Tickets sell out quickly, so we recommend purchasing yours as soon as possible. The journey is family-friendly, and departs several times a day.

Aside from the holiday journey, the railroad regularly hosts scenic rides on its historic trains, offering several different routes. One popular route includes a stop at a hidden bar tucked away in the woods, or you can take a 2-hour journey to the summit of the line. The railroad also offers rail bikes for those who want to do something more active while still enjoying the scenery.
