San Francisco has some pretty interesting sites to see, but it’s not every day you see a full house floating in the middle of the bay. This weekend, a houseboat was spotted moving across the bay, to the surprise of many people. It was an especially jarring image because from far away, you can’t tell it’s a houseboat (and supposed to float), so it looks like a pretty strange sight.
Several Bay Area residents posted on social media videos of the house being pulled across the bay.
According to X users, the houseboat was seen reaching the Bay Bridge.
The multistory house was being pulled by a smaller boat across the bay, and its destination is believed to be a dock in Commodore Marina. According to SF Gate, the boat was moving north from Redwood City towards Sausalito. The Coast Guard commented that they had not been notified of the houseboat’s movement and that it was still moving on the bay on Monday.
It’s not unusual to see a houseboat in the Bay Area, and they’re especially common in Sausalito. But seeing a massive a two story house in the water one day is definitely strange, especially since it’s not on a larger craft, and is only being towed by a small boat. While some houseboats are docked for the long term in places like Sausalito, many residents in a Redwood City marina have had to move due to an eviction. The marina is not zoned for residential use, and therefore, the houseboat residents had to leave after many years of calling the marina home.
