Indian Springs Calistoga has been welcoming visitors longer than just about any resort in the state. Established in 1861, it is considered the oldest continuously operating pool and spa facility in California, and its natural resources are entirely its own.
Whether you’re marking a birthday, planning a wellness weekend, or just looking to genuinely unwind and take in some history and nature, this place earns a visit.
What can you do at Indian Springs Calistoga?
A visit can be as restorative or as active as you want. The spa treatments are usually the main draw – the Classic Mud Bath uses 100% pure volcanic ash mined directly from the property, combined with geothermal mineral water, followed by a steam, blanket wrap, and soak.
Here’s what else you can find at the resort:
- An Olympic-sized mineral pool built in 1913 (one of the largest in California) that’s open until midnight for hotel guests, and a quieter adult pool
- Sam’s Social Club restaurant, the poolside Chaise Lounge, and La Palmeraie, an all-day cafe and bar
- Complimentary fitness classes, seven days a week
- Free live music three nights a week
- Complimentary bikes, bocce, croquet, shuffleboard, hammock garden, and a labyrinth
Indian Springs Calistoga history
The Wappo people bathed in these geothermal waters 8,000 years ago, long before the land became a resort. In 1861, the original spa, mud baths, mineral pool, and a racetrack were built here.
Volcanic ash from the ancient eruption of nearby Mt. Konocti runs through the property, and four thermal geysers force superheated water up from 4,000 feet underground. That ash and that water, combined, are what make the mud baths here unlike anything else in California.
Today the resort spans 17 acres of rolling hills, olive groves, and lavender gardens.
