Last year, news of Macy’s closing down multiple locations, including the iconic store in San Francisco’s Union Square, was seen as a significant loss for Downtown SF. The massive store is located on Union Square and is known for being a staple for holiday shopping in the city, especially with its dazzling holiday displays each year.
While news of the closure came in 2024, the company assured San Franciscans that the SF location would not close immediately. Now, the major retailer has announced further news regarding the SF location. Macy’s is partnering with real estate developers TMG Partners to “reimagine the space,” according to Mayor Daniel Lurie.

Mayor Lurie shared in an Instagram post that the retailer is “staying open indefinitely,” and Macy’s has confirmed they will stay open through the 2025 holiday season. While the future of the store is still uncertain, with no plans released for how Macy’s and TMG Partners plan to “reimagine” the space, it is still exciting to hear the store will be around for the holidays.

The 2024 announcement of Macy’s closing 150 stores came as many other major retailers left Downtown San Francisco, including Nordstrom. Now, the square has seen recent openings, such as the popular Nintendo Store, which is only the second Nintendo location in the United States. Laurie also announced that the former Uniqlo space had found a new tenant, and that Maybaum gallery would open in the space formerly occupied by Barney’s. Zara has also announced plans to open a new flagship store in Union Square.
Macy’s is well known for its holiday displays every year, featuring numerous decorations in its windows. The storefront faces the square, which features a large Christmas tree every winter, along with a pop-up ice rink.
