This spring, some of the most iconic paintings from the Impressionist era are coming to San Francisco. Monet is well known for his beautiful landscapes that launched the Impressionist movement, and some of his most popular paintings are beautiful landscapes of Venice, and you can see them on view at the de Young in San Francisco this spring.

The exhibition, aptly titled Monet and Venice, features over 20 paintings, including some of his other popular works, such as Water Lilies. Monet and Venice is the first exhibition dedicated to his Venetian paintings since they were initially unveiled. The exhibit opened at the Brooklyn Museum and will come to the de Young in San Francisco on March 21, 2026.
“Although Monet visited Venice only once, his paintings of the city are among his most dazzling,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “Unlike bustling scenes painted by other artists, Monet’s Venice is hauntingly deserted, with its architecture, buildings, and canals dissolving in an atmospheric light. This exhibition offers an opportunity to experience Monet’s sublime vision of the famed Italian city, and for visitors to feel inspired by new perspectives on an artist they may think they know very well.”
Monet visited Venice later in his life, in 1908, leading to some of his most popular and well-known works today. Monet’s Venetian paintings will be joined by other prominent works from painters in Venice, including John Singer Sargent, J. M. W. Turner, and more. The exhibit will be presented chronologically, both by Monet and by the artists who came before him, with works spanning the 18th to the 20th centuries.
