The newest meme to take the internet by storm has been a particularly adorable baby hippo in Thailand, called Moo Deng, who gained viral stardom with its adorable facial expressions. While you’ve probably seen plenty of Moo Deng memes, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo where Moo Deng lives is a long way from San Francisco, but luckily the zookeepers have a solution for international fans. The zoo recently released a livestream of their Hippopotamus habitat so you can follow along with the baby hippo’s day to day.
The 24-hour livestream is focused on the enclosure, so you won’t always see the adorable baby hippo, but you can always check out the zoo’s Instagram for more photos of the newly-minted animal celebrity. The Khao Kheow Open Zoo isn’t the first to create a livestream for their popular animals. In fact, SF has plenty of its own local animal celebrities that have constant live streams as well.
The California Academy of Sciences has multiple live webcams for their numerous animals. You can watch the penguin colony from two different cameras via the webcam, with their twice-daily feeding time being particularly exciting. The academy website also has a live webcam on their in-house reef featuring various types of rays. Of course, if you can go in person, the Academy of Sciences has plenty more animals, exhibits, and event special events like Thursday night parties. If you want to turn your view to farther outside SF, a live webcam on the Farallon Islands roughly 30 miles west of SF gives a glimpse of the birds and marine animals living in the area.
If that isn’t enough, you can still see an adorable Pygmy Hippopotamus in person at the San Francisco Zoo named Udo. The Pygmy hippo joined the zoo in 2022 and is the first at the SF Zoo since 2004.
So, while Moo Deng may be far away, you can still keep up with the baby hippo whenever you want, and there are plenty of adorable SF animals that deserve some love.
