If you’ve ever passed Ocean Beach at night, you might have noticed several small bonfires glowing throughout the sandy shore. The Ocean Beach bonfires are a beloved tradition in San Francisco, and they are officially open for 2026.
From March through October, San Franciscans are allowed to use designated fire pits at Ocean Beach for bonfires. The fire pits are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can find the 16 designated fire pits between stairwells 15 and 20, towards the northern end of the beach.

The pits are free to use; you are responsible for bringing your own supplies, and the National Park Service emphasizes the importance of leaving no trace after using them. Accelerants, glass, and alcohol are all prohibited, and you can only use water to extinguish the fire. It is important to note that bonfires are allowed only in the designated pits, not in makeshift fire pits.
On warm, clear nights, the fire pits can be very popular, so if you want to be sure to get a spot, we recommend arriving at the beach earlier in the evening or during the day. Of course, be sure to bring plenty of layers, as Ocean Beach is known for its cool, foggy days.
While you’re in the Outer Sunset, we recommend taking a walk along the new park, Sunset Dunes, that was made out of the Great Highway. The former road has been closed to traffic and transformed into a park, with frequent runners and bikers. Plus, check out one of the many nearby restaurants or bars, such as Hook Fish or Woods.
The Ocean Beach fire pits are open from 6 am to 9:30 pm every day. The fire pits are open from now until the end of October, so you have plenty of chances to check them out. You can learn more about the fire regulations here.
