Point Reyes National Seashore is a scenic nature preserve just north of San Francisco, known for its sweeping ocean views and many beautiful trails. The preserve is also home to a historic lighthouse and many beautiful beaches that are popular destinations for day trips outside San Francisco. This weekend, Point Reyes is hosting a wholesome sand sculpture competition at one of its popular beaches. Keep reading for all the details.
Point Reyes free sand sculpture competition
This weekend, Point Reyes’ iconic Drakes Beach is hosting a free sand sculpture competition. The annual event is returning for its 44th year at the scenic seashore and is completely free to enter. Both children and adults are welcome to enter, with sand sculptures ranging from massive, detailed creations like mermaids and crabs to more typical sand castles.
The competition is this Saturday, August 29, and registration opens at 9 am at the Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center. From there, you have 3 hours to create a sand sculpture, with judging starting at 12 pm, and prizes awarded at 3 pm. The competition has four categories: children, families, Adults, and finally a People’s Choice Award.
The competition is family-friendly, and we recommend bringing a picnic to enjoy the beach after the competition. Drakes Beach is known for its sandstone cliffs and beautiful views, and the smaller waves make it a popular destination. The beach also boasts amenities like picnic benches, bathrooms, a bookstore, and a visitor center.
Drakes Beach is approximately an hour and a half drive from San Francisco, and we recommend stopping by the preserve’s historic lighthouse while you’re in the area.
