If you’re planning to travel in the next year, there are some new requirements that you’ll want to get dialed in before you head to the airport.
You may have heard about the ETIAS authorization required for travel to Europe this year, but there’s another authorization you’ll need for domestic travel: REAL ID. Here we’ll get you up to speed on everything to know about this new form of identification required for all Americans boarding domestic flights.
What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is the new federally accepted form of identification for Americans traveling domestically by plane. It’s also used to enter certain federal facilities such as military bases and federal courthouses. All REAL IDs have a star in the top right corner.
A California REAL ID will have this star symbol combined with an image of a golden bear. When you go to renew your current driver’s license or identification card, your new card will bear this symbol to denote REAL ID compliance.
When REAL IDs go into effect, you’ll still be able to drive in the country with your regular driver’s license. But without a REAL ID you won’t be able to board a domestic flight.
Why do you need a REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act of 2005 set REAL IDs as a minimum national security standard for state-issued driver’s licenses. It requires stricter documentation to guarantee the owner’s identity.
When will you need a REAL ID?
The REAL ID deadline is May 7, 2025. By then, every American will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.
How do you get a REAL ID?
The minimum REAL ID requirements are your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two proofs of address of principal residence, and lawful status.
Some states will have additional requirements. For REAL ID in California, you’ll need to visit the DMV with proof of identity, such as a U.S. passport, a certified copy of your U.S. birth certificate, or a valid Permanent Resident Card. To prove California residency you’ll need two different documents with your full name and mailing address, such as a utility bill or bank statement.
How much does a REAL ID cost?
The price to apply for a REAL ID varies by state. In California, it costs $45 for a driver’s license and $39 for an identification card.
Will alternative IDs be accepted?
According to the Department of Homeland Security, you can use a U.S. passport as an alternative to a REAL ID. Other alternatives include a U.S. passport card, enhanced driver’s license, or a military ID. See more alternative forms of identification here.
