The SFMTA’s new Speed Safety Camera project will officially start issuing citations at 33 new locations on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025.
While the program first launched back on March 20th, and all cameras have been issuing warnings since June 6th, now is officially the time for drivers to get in gear—or else face traffic fines up to $500.
Here’s what to know before you hit the road this week.
Speed penalties, violation fees, and fines
State law AB 645 sets speed penalties as follows. Fees are reduced for those who qualify for low-income transit fares and public assistance programs.
- 11-15 MPH over posted speed limit: $50 fee (or $25 low-income/$10 public assistance)
- 16-25 MPH over posted speed limit: $100 fee (or $50 low-income/$20 public assistance)
- 26+ MPH over posted speed limit: $200 fee (or $100 low-income/$40 public assistance)
- Any vehicle traveling 100+ MPH: $500 fee (or $250 low-income/$100 public assistance)

SFMTA installed new Speed Safety Cameras at 33 locations across the city, from Golden Gate Park to the Excelsior.
They are located in spots deemed “high-risk areas,” enforcing speed limits in both directions of travel (unless otherwise noted below).
