The San Francisco Marathon is a beloved tradition, with runners training for months to run the beautiful and difficult course. The race is a major event for the city, with large crowds gathering to cheer on runners. While the marathon is always a fun event, if you’re planning on driving or taking public transit around the city, you want to be aware of the road closures caused by the race.
SF Marathon Road Closures and Traffic Advisories 2024
The marathon route runs roughly around the perimeter of the city. Starting at the Embarcadero, it continues over the Golden Gate Bridge, through the Presidio, through Golden Gate Park, and eventually makes its way back to the Embarcadero.
Golden Gate Bridge
Roads along the runner’s route will be closed from 5:00 am until 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 28. Since much of the route is along the coastline, many major roadways are not affected. The Golden Gate Bridge will also remain open to vehicle traffic going both directions as usual, but the sidewalks will be closed to accommodate runners. The eastside of the bridge will open at 8:45 am for pedestrians and the westside at 10:00 am for bikes. From Midnight until 10 am, you won’t be able to access Golden Gate Bridge through the presidio, and Crissy Field Avenue will be closed from 4:30 am until 10:00 am.
Road closures
In the Richmond, 26th and 17th Ave will be closed, and Haight Street will be closed in the Haight. The Mission and Potrero Districts can expect significant traffic delays due to the marathon as well. For more information about specific road closures in your neighborhood, check out the SF Marathon website. We recommend planning for traffic delays throughout the city on Sunday, July 28, especially in the morning.
