One of the most scenic ways to cross the bay is going to be closed for the next few weeks, as commuters and tourists are facing a temporary disruption in ferry service between San Francisco and Sausalito. The Golden Gate Ferry announced a suspension of their ferry service following the discovery of damage to the Sausalito pier during a routine inspection last Friday.
According to the Golden Gate Ferry, the damage impacted one of the pier’s four piles, which will require immediate repairs to ensure the safety of all passengers. The repairs began over the weekend, and once the repairs are complete, another inspection will be performed to ensure passenger safety before the service restarts.
The ferry service, which began on August 15, 1970, is a popular route for both residents and visitors, with over 207,000 passengers in 2022 alone. The ferry travels to Lakspur, Sausalito, Tiburon, and Angel Island, with fares for adults costing $14 for adults. The ferry is still in service for the other destinations at this time. The ferry departs on a frequent basis, typically every 45 minutes to an hour, making it convenient for commuters or those looking to spend a day in a waterfront town without driving out of San Francisco.
In lieu of ferry service, while repairs are underway, Golden Gate Transit buses are shuttling passengers between the two cities. These buses can be found at the front of the terminal, offering a temporary alternative to the usual ferry route. Hopefully, the ferry will be back in service soon, especially for those who use it to commute.
