SFMOMA is one of San Francisco’s most popular and well-known art museums, boasting an expansive collection featuring iconic artists like Matisse, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and many more. The museum has multiple floors, filled with its permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, including a newly opened exhibit focused on Matisse’s iconic painting, Femme au chapeau.
This weekend is a rare opportunity to explore the museum for free, including its newest exhibit.
SFMOMA Free Community Day May 2026
The modern art museum will occasionally host free community days, inviting people to explore the many galleries for free. The next community day is this weekend, on Sunday, May 24, and it’s the perfect opportunity to see the newly opened exhibition, Matisse’s Femme au chapeau: A Modern Scandal. Aside from the new temporary exhibition, we recommend exploring the recently reimagined Fisher Collection. The Fisher Collection is expansive, and almost 250 works are included in the current presentation.
We recommend reserving your ticket online in advance to secure a ticket before arriving to the museum (and skip the ticket line).
Free gallery space at SFMOMA

While free admission days only occur sporadically, the art museum boasts free gallery space all year. SFMOMA offers 45,000 square feet that is always open to the public, featuring some large-scale art installations, including massive murals and moving sculptures.
Don’t miss SFMOMA’s free community day this Sunday, May 24. The museum is located at 151 3rd St, San Francisco, and you can reserve your tickets here.
