Chef Daniel Tellez, formerly of Copita in Sausalito, is bringing his take on Mexican cuisine to a space that has housed many beloved restaurants in the past, dating back to the 1960s. Taco Rouge has big shoes to fill–the Polk Gulch restaurant was formerly occupied by Nick’s Crispy Tacos, The Jumping Frog, Johnny Loves, and Rouge.
As the name suggests, tacos are the main event at this restaurant. The menu includes Mexican-style street tacos, with tacos al pastor and taco arabe made with marinated pork served on pita bread. Each Taco Rouge recipe is a fusion of authentic Mexican recipes with an innovative, California-inspired twist,” said Chef Tellez.
Award-winning Chef Telez studied and worked in Europe before his time at Copita in Sausalito, and he is excited to bring the community together through the space as a multifaceted restaurant and bar.
During the day, the restaurant serves mouthwatering street food and turns into a lively bar at night. Late-night tacos will be available from the to-go window, perfect for satisfying post-bar cravings. The restaurant will host live music and DJs to create a vibrant atmosphere. The bar serves various cocktails perfect for a night out, plus its close proximity to the Marina District with other lively bars makes it a great place to start or end your night.
Plus, the weekend fun is completed with a Saturday brunch option. Menu highlights include breakfast tacos, huevos rancheros, churro pancakes, Mexican coffee, and horchata. You can also indulge in classic brunch cocktails with a twist, including a Mezcal spritz.
The space includes a large mural and wall sculpture by artist Michael Brennan, along with comfortable booths and a stylish bar. Taco Rouge is located at 1500 Broadway and is open every day. The restaurant is open late-night, closing the earliest at 11:00 pm, and on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, it stays open until 2:00 am.
As for the space’s former occupants, Nick’s Crispy Tacos has found a new home at Rockwell at 3200 Filmore St in the Marina. Taco Rouge will open on August 22, 2023, hosting a ticked opening party featuring live music, drinks, and food.
