A winter storm is heading for the Lake Tahoe area, with up to 12 feet of snow expected to fall. The Lake Tahoe area has a blizzard warning in place starting on February 29 through March 3rd at 10 am. The forecast predicts heavy snow and wind.
The snow is forecasted to begin Thursday after 10 am and continue through Sunday. The National Weather Service recommends avoiding all travel during the blizzard warning due to near whiteout conditions, strong winds, and heavy snow that could cause tree limbs to fall or power lines to fall. Power outages may occur as well. The NWS states travel is very dangerous and should be avoided. If you have to travel, make sure to take a winter survival kit with you.
While some may be dreading a storm, many are looking forward to the fresh snow on the ski slopes in Tahoe. This winter has started off slow, especially compared to last year’s heavy snowfall.
Bay Area weather forecast through the weekend
San Francisco has been treated to blue skies and warm temperatures over the last few days, but it looks like the rain is coming back starting this week. There’s a 70% chance of rain starting Thursday morning, and it continues through the weekend. The NWS only predicts a chance of rain for Saturday night and a slight chance of rain on Sunday, fortunately. A slight chance of rain continues into early next week as well, so we recommend soaking up the sun while you can.
Stay safe during the winter storm, SF! Make sure to check NWS for updated forecasts, alerts, and safety recommendations. Travel in Tahoe during the storm is not advised by the NWS, so be sure to make your plans accordingly.
