San Francisco has made it onto another highly-coveted list! TIME Magazine recently named SF on their “World’s Greatest Places 2022” list. Only 50 places across the world made the cut, 5 of which are in the United States.
TIME cites several recent local developments for having impacted their decision to include San Francisco. First up is the Presidio’s highly-anticipated Tunnel Tops park , a 14-acre waterfront park that is years in the making and will open to the public on July 17, 2022.
They also mention the Institute of Contemporary Art, a new art museum opening in SF this September. It will work to “prioritize artists over art holdings, individuals over institutions, and equity and expansion of the canon” for a gallery experience meant to address the flaws in the fine art world head-on.
Additional businesses mentioned by TIME include the legendary women-led La Cocina Municipal Marketplace and its new trans-owned Fluid Cafe, which opened in August 2021; as well as new hotels LINE SF (opening this summer), 1 Hotel San Francisco, and the Hyatt Regency Downtown SOMA.
The other 4 U.S. cities that made the list were Detroit, Michigan; Miami, Florida; Park City, Utah; and Portland, Oregon. Other North American places included are Tofino, British Columbia; Toronto, Ontario; and Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.
Additional international places listed range from Copenhagen, Seoul, and Istanbul to the Great Barrier Reef and the Arctic. The list notably includes the International Space Station for a cheeky “out of this world” nod.
TIME compiled the list by soliciting nominations from an “international network of correspondents and contributors,” with an emphasis on places with “new and exciting experiences” that are proactively evolving to keep up with a changing world.
