Yosemite is known for its dramatic landscapes. With sweeping views, massive mountains, and numerous hiking trails, it’s easy to see why tourists flock to the national park in the summer. One way to enjoy the park is by staying in one of the scenic campgrounds, and one of the park’s most popular campgrounds just reopened.
Tuolumne Meadows Campground closed three years ago for a major rehabilitation project that cost $26 million. The Alpine meadow is known for its proximity to the Tuolumne River, combined with iconic views of the park. The campground is an essential part of Yosemite National Park for visitors, seeing over 140,000 overnight guests each year. The project was funded through the Great American Outdoors Act, which aims to tackle major projects to improve the United States’ public lands.
“Tuolumne Meadows is a treasured destination for families, backpackers, equestrians, and nature lovers from around the world,” said Yosemite National Park Acting Superintendent Ray McPadden “Thanks to the Great American Outdoors Act, we’ve been able to revitalize this beloved campground in a way that honors its past, protects its environment, and prepares it for future generations of visitors.”

The renovations included modernizing the campground, which originally opened in the 1930s. New bathrooms, picnic tables, food lockers, and a winter vault toilet were added. A new water distribution system was added to help the sewer infrastructure in the campground. Plus, 29 new hike-in camp sites were added to accommodate more people. A major part of the rehabilitation project was to protect the Tuolumne River. A road was realigned to make more room for the river, and campsites were relocated to help restore the habitat in the area.
Tuolumne Meadows is known for numerous hiking and backpacking trails. The summit to Mount Lyell starts in the meadow, and the John Muir and Pacific Crest Trails go into the area. There are also several domes in the area that draw rock climbers.
Tuolumne Meadows Campground is located at Tioga Pass Rd, TUOLUMNE MEADOWS, CA 95389. You can learn more about the campground and make reservations here.
