Ready to get back on the ice in Downtown SF? Layer up and break out your favorite wintery garb, because the Union Square Ice Rink is the place to be during SF’s holiday season. The popular ice rink is opening this week on November 6th, 2024 through January 20th 2025, and is especially popular among kids and families.
Special events at Union Square Ice Rink
A collection of special events is on the calendar, so you can take your skating experience up a notch! Here’s what’s on the calendar so far for 2024.
- Nov. 6: Opening Celebration: Attend a festive opening ceremony on Nov. 6 from 5 to 7 pm with performances on the ice. The first 100 skates are free for the event.
- Nov. 29: Black Friday with Wild: Skate to today’s biggest hits and chart toppers on Black Friday.
- Dec. 5: Drag on Ice: Watch a dazzling drag show right on the rink in a festive holiday performance.
- Dec. 12: Silent Skate: You’ve heard of silent disco, but this time it’s on the ice.
- Jan. 1: Polar Bear Skate: Forget the polar plunge and start 2025 with a day on the ice in your swimsuit.
- Whynot Wednesdays through Dec. 18: Weekly celebration inspired by the Whynot Christmas Carol at 7 pm.
- Flashback Fridays: Nov. 15, Dec. 20 & Jan. 17: Listen to your favorite ’80s throwbacks while skating.
- Saturdays and Sundays: Free Skate lessons: 50 people each Saturday and Sunday will be selected by lottery to receive skate lessons.
- Classical Sundays: Hit the ice while your favorite classical music plays on Sunday mornings.
Tickets and more
Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for children 8 and under, including skate rental. 60-minute sessions begin every 90 minutes from 10am until 11:00pm daily, except for December 31 when the rink closes early at 9:30pm.
You can also rent skate helpers and lockers, and there are options for private parties to rent the rink on select Mondays and Tuesdays.
Union Square’s Safeway Holiday Ice Rink is located at 333 Post Street in San Francisco, in the heart of Union Square (duh!). Remember, the rink will only be open until January 20, 2025, so be sure to grab tickets and join in on the fun.
