Big Sur’s rugged coast holds a whole world of cliffside fine-dining destinations, luxury eco-resorts, and secluded multi-million dollar mansions. Even lifelong Californians are known to eye the bucket-list experiences in this isolated part of the state; and for us, the tranquil Japanese hot baths at Spa Alila’s Ventana Big Sur are at the very top.
The 5-star resort is one of Big Sur’s best hidden gem sanctuaries, perched across 150 acres of meadows and forest above the ocean. While luxury is the focus, Ventana Big Sur also captures a more low-key energy that harkens back toa more rugged spa culture of the 1970s.
Here’s a closer look at what’s actually up there.

Tranquil pools and Japanese hot baths
Alila Ventana Big Sur is designed in a way that allows travelers to relax within the beauty of the coastline rather than drive past it.
The tranquil retreat has 54 suites spread out through the landscape, situated among quiet trails and pools that look out over the Pacific Ocean.

The open-air Japanese Hot Baths are a highlight, hosting a communal soaking area within rustic pools heated to 104°F year-round. The design is inspired by Japanese onsen culture, which sees soaking in hot springs as a ritualistic way to care for the body and mind.
Alila Ventana Big Sur also has two heated outdoor pools: one tucked high among the redwoods, and one infinity-edged pool with ocean views.

Guests can try a range of amenities, including guided hikes and classes, as well as open-air movement areas and complimentary fitness equipment. Dining is inspired by local ingredients and classic California cuisine to compliment the scenic surroundings.
Visiting Big Sur
Depending on traffic, it can take less than 3 hours to drive to Big Sur from San Francisco. The drive along Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) is a major part of the visit, winding along the coast above cliffs that plunge straight into the ocean.

Plan on making classic stops at the Bixby Creek Bridge, Pfeiffer Beach with its purple‑tinted sand, and McWay Falls, which is one of the state’s only waterfalls that flows straight into the ocean. We’re also partial to Nepenthe, a historic Californian restaurant with a beautiful open-air deck.
