San Francisco is getting ready to reopen Buchanan Street Mall in the Western Addition, bringing back 5 blocks of upgraded park and community space for the neighborhood to enjoy.
The park has been under construction since 2025 after roughly a decade of planning and $34 million in funding.
Upgrading the Buchanan Street Mall
Once a patchwork of aging paths and underused lawns across five blocks, the linear park runs from Eddy to Grove between the Fillmore and Civic Center.
The renovation transforms the space with new play areas, rain gardens, seating, and paved walking routes.
A highlight of the new mall is a “Memory Walk,” where local artists are collaborating to tell the story of the Fillmore and the Western Addition through art, symbols, and interpretive panels.
Per the latest construction update in July, contractors have completed much of the paving, started digging the rain gardens to help manage stormwater, and planted new lawns. Crews are also trenching to connect a modern electrical system to the PG&E grid, powering future lighting and neighborhood programming.
During this stretch of work, through-access is still closed between Fulton and McAllister, and between McAllister and Golden Gate Avenue.
The goal is to open the park this fall 2026, although the city has not yet announced an official opening date.
