One of the best ways to explore San Francisco is by walking. The city is small, covering only approximately 49 square miles, with unique neighborhoods in close proximity; it’s easy to explore many parts of the city on foot. If you’re not up for wandering, you can join a free, guided tour led by knowledgeable guides.
Free walking tours by SF City Guides

SF City Guides is a volunteer-run organization where passionate history buffs and SF experts give walking tours of the city. Guides focus on history and local folklore. The San Francisco Public Library primarily sponsors the organization, and the tours are given for free.
Tours happen frequently, and this weekend you can choose from over 50 walking tours throughout San Francisco. Keep reading for just a few of our tour recommendations this weekend, May 22-25.
- Nob Hill: Nob Hill is an iconic San Francisco neighborhood, known for its perch atop one of San Francisco’s major hills. It’s home to numerous historic buildings, including the Fairmont Hotel and Grace Cathedral. While you’re in the neighborhood, we recommend attending a unique light display inside Grace Cathedral. The immersive show is called Aura, and it uses light, sound, and the iconic architecture in the cathedral to create the show.
- Pacific Heights Mansions: Pacific Heights is filled with many historic, impressive mansions. The neighborhood has beautiful bay views, featuring manicured, unique homes.
- Presidio: From Military Base to National Park with Tunnel Tops: The Presidio is a beautiful area in San Francisco with a fascinating and long history. The former military base is now a public park and home to many businesses. The tour also includes a stop at the scenic Tunnel Tops park with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
These are just a few of the dozens of tours offered this weekend. While the tours are always free, donations are always appreciated to keep the tours going.
About SF City Guides
SF City guides date back to 1976, when an SF librarian, Gladys Hansen, was asked to give tours of City Hall. Hansen started training volunteers to give tours, and two years later, SF City Guides were officially established. Today, there are almost 300 volunteer guides across over 75 tours.
