The Exploratorium is a popular science, technology, and art museum in San Francisco, offering educational exhibitions and hands-on learning opportunities. The museum is family-friendly, but also hosts after-dark events for adults equipped with a bar and activities on Thursday nights.
The museum has some exciting programming coming up for Mother’s Day this weekend, and admission is pay-as-you-wish. Here’s what to know.
Mother’s Day at the Exploratorium
This weekend, the Exploratorium will host a “pay-what-you-wish community day,” perfect for a Mother’s Day excursion. Admission to the museum will be on a first-come-first serve basis between 11 am and 4:30 pm on Sunday, May 10.
The Exploratorium will have live music and performances intended to honor mothers and caregivers throughout the day, with programming in both Spanish and English. There will be an arts and crafts station making paper flowers and marbled cards, and a story time for children. Plus, you can dance to an all-female salsa band that will perform at 2:30 pm.
New at the Exploratorium

While you’re at the Exploratorium, we recommend stopping by the new waterfront cafe, called the Catalyst Coffee Lab. The coffee bar is on Pier 15 with outdoor seating, and you don’t need a museum ticket to visit. For a bite to eat, you can head to the Tinkering Table inside the museum, which offers healthy bowls, grab-and-go sandwiches, soups, and more.
The science and technology museum was opened in 1969 by Frank Oppenheimer, a professor and experimental physicist. The museum is known for including art alongside its science exhibits, and most exhibitions are created in-house. The museum is often changing and adding new experiments and technology, so even if you’ve been before, it’s worth another visit.
