Every holiday season, the Civic Center Plaza hosts a massive tree-lighting celebration to usher in the season. The large Christmas tree is decorated with numerous lights directly in front of San Francisco City Hall. You can also expect City Hall to be illuminated in festive green and red during the holidays to match the 50-foot tree. The tree lighting is next Wednesday, on December 3, 2025, from 4 to 7 pm in Civic Center Plaza, featuring free family-friendly activities. The free celebration will start at 4 pm, and the tree will be officially lit at 5:30 pm.
You can expect several seasonal performances, including tap dancing Christmas trees, music, and a Santa appearance. The Broadway All-Star Band will perform, along with the San Francisco Boys Chorus and even a performance from a clown. Plus, you can expect “snow” flurries to help bring some winter fun to California. A holiday tradition is returning for 2025, with the annual toy drive that provides 500 gifts for children 12 and under. The San Francisco Public Library will also host a book giveaway during the event.
Look out for the Makers Village, featuring creative activities hosted by SF Etsy. You can make ornaments, children can write letters to Santa, and more at the craft area. Finally, you can expect small bites and drinks for purchase during the festive event.
San Francisco also has numerous other holiday activities, including a temporary ice rink in Union Square that hosts fun events throughout the holiday season. Plus, we recommend stopping by Macy’s in Union Square to see their popular holiday window displays, which feature adoptable puppies and kittens.
You can learn more about the Civic Center Tree Lighting and RSVP here. You do not need a ticket for the event, and all ages are welcome.
