Summer is almost here, which means San Franciscans can look forward to plenty of exciting outdoor events. A popular free movie series is returning to Downtown San Francisco this June, with five movie screenings in Union Square.
Free movies in Union Square
Starting this June, Union Square will host a series of free movie screenings. The outdoor movies first debuted last summer and are now back for another year. The series, called Cinema on the Square, kicks off on June 20 with a screening of KPop Demon Hunters. The series will continue through September, with screenings on select Saturdays. Films range from family-friendly classics like The Princess Diaries to more mature movies like The Birdcage.
“After a successful first season, ‘Cinema on the Square’ is back for another summer, bringing people together in the heart of downtown for evenings filled with entertainment, connection, and community,” said Sarah Madland, Recreation and Parks Department General Manager. “Fun and engaging recurring events like these give people new reasons to enjoy our public spaces. They also build on the momentum of live music, free concerts, sports activations, and other programming happening throughout downtown, helping ensure the area remains a vibrant destination that offers something for everyone.”

The free movies are just one of many public activities in Union Square, including dancing lessons, art classes, and family-friendly activities. San Franciscans can also expect other free outdoor movies this summer, starting this weekend. Sundown Cinema is back with a series of free outdoor movies in parks across SF, until October.
