This weekend, the historic Golden Gate Bandshell will host a free folk music festival with a lineup of local performers. The annual festival is a popular tradition in San Francisco, celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend.
San Francisco Free Folk Festival 2026
The free folk festival is on Saturday, July 11, from 11 am to 6 pm, and the event is known to draw large crowds of 2 to 3 thousand people. The festival includes two stages, a dance area, and four workshop areas in the Park’s music concourse. The Bandshell stage will have 7 performances between 12 and 4 pm, and an acoustic stage will feature 12 performances from 2 to 6 pm.
The dance area will host workshops on various dance types, including a traditional English dance (Morris), Californian dances dating between 1776 and 1850, and a Klezmer dance workshop. Other workshops include storytelling, a lesson on folk songs of women’s history, and many more.
The San Francisco Free Folk Festival was first started in 1977 by the San Francisco Folk Music Club. The festival debuted at the Hall of Flowers but has since moved to various locations around SF, including Fort Mason and local schools. In 2023, the festival moved to the music concourse in Golden Gate Park.
The Free Folk Festival is just one of many events at the bandshell, which regularly hosts free concerts as part of an ongoing series hosted by arts nonprofit Illuminate.
The festival is free and open to the public, and a parking garage is available nearby, with the entrance on 10th Ave. If you would rather not pay for parking, the site is also accessible via public transportation and a short walk into the park.
