Nestled just a short drive from one of California’s most charming small towns sits a historic ranch turned hotel. The idyllic ranch and hotel is complete with adorable sheep, historic lodging, and a scenic restaurant.
Mission Ranch and Hotel is just a five-minute drive from downtown Carmel, a seaside town known for its fairytale-inspired cottages along the coast. However, the hotel’s proximity to Carmel is just one small draw.

The expansive 22-acre property features sprawling fields filled with adorable sheep and views of the ocean and Point Lobos. Accommodations are in separate buildings throughout the property, including whimsical cottages. The main barn has been converted to rooms, or you can stay in a renovated hayloft. Of course, the classic ranch farmhouse is also open to guests.

A restaurant overlooks the field, with the ranch’s sheep on full display. Hearty classics like steak, lamb, and prime rib are featured on the menu, along with seafood and pasta options, but the main event is the view of the property. The restaurant feels old-school and cozy, with views of the manicured fields stretching before you.
The history of Mission Ranch: from potato farm to Clint Eastwood

The ranch’s history dates back to the 1800s. It was originally owned by Juan Romera, who sold the 160-acre property to William Curtis in 1852. Curtis then turned the ranch into a dairy. The ranch was also used as a potato farm for many years before becoming an officers’ club during World War II. Since then, the ranch has had a total of 17 owners, most recently bought by legendary actor Clint Eastwood. Eastwood bought the property in 1986 and invested in renovating it to what it is today. Eastwood was also notably the mayor of Carmel in 1986 and 1988.
Mission Ranch is approximately two hours from San Francisco and is the perfect stop while exploring Big Sur.
