The California State Parks Foundation just released the results of a 2026 statewide vote awarding superlative titles to the best parks in the state. Out of the system’s 280 parks, the winner of “Best California State Park for Day Trips” happens to be within driving distance of San Francisco: Point Lobos.
Point Lobos State Park is widely regarded as one of the best parks in California. Even the California State Parks system calls it a “crown jewel,” and landscape painter Francis McComas referred to it as “the greatest meeting of land and water in the world.”
Luckily for us, Point Lobos makes for an easy enough day trip from San Francisco. The drive can take just over 2 hours via 101, although many travelers opt for the slower, but more scenic, Highway 1 route. It passes through more great destinations, including Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, Pigeon Point, Santa Cruz, Pacific Grove, and Carmel.

About Point Lobos
The Indigenous Rumsen people lived in the Point Lobos region for over 2,500 years, until European settlers arrived in the late 1700s.
By the mid-19th century, fishermen and whalers from China, Japan, and Portugal had established themselves at what is now Whalers Cove, constructing a cabin that still stands today as a museum. In 1933, the State of California acquired Point Lobos, ensuring its natural beauty would be protected for future generations.
Today, visitors can experience rugged coves, dramatic sandstone and granite formations, sea caves, coastal grasslands, and fantastic SCUBA diving and snorkeling. Many choose to hike the Point Lobos Loop Trail, a 6.3-mile route that takes about 2–3 hours and passes by the area’s most scenic viewpoints.
