This week, San Franciscans can look forward to another free concert right in Chinatown. Electronic musician ZHU is set to play a free show on Wednesday night, accompanied by a packed night market.
The night market and festival celebrate Daniel Laurie’s inauguration as San Francisco’s 46th mayor. San Franciscans can expect a lively night market with local vendors and multiple performances, including headliner ZHU, DJ Ruckus, and more. The event starts at 5:30 and runs until 9 pm on Grant Avenue between Sacramento and Jackson in Chinatown.
ZHU is a San Francisco Bay Area local and released his first song in 2014. The electronic musician is known for his songs Faded, Generationwhy, and Superfriends. He’s collaborated with many major musicians, including Skrillex, and released his first studio album in 2016. ZHU’s most recent album debuted in March 2024. The musician has performed at major festivals, including Ultra Miami and Coachella.
The event builds on Chinatown’s many popular night markets, which happen on the second Friday of every month. The market first started in late 2023, drawing thousands of eager San Franciscans. As a result, the markets have become a frequent event in the iconic SF neighborhood. This is also not the first free show in the city recently or even of the year. Just last week, Toro y Moi drew thousands to Downtown San Francisco for a free DJ set as part of Downtown First Thursdays. Other free shows last year included performances by Portugal the Man, Thundercat, and Rebecca Black.
You can see Zhu perform the free show on Wednesday, January 8, in Chinatown on Grant Avenue. The market starts at 5:30 pm, and the event runs until 9 pm. You can expect plenty of live music and great food during the festive celebration. The event is free and open to all ages.
